I work closely with a number of institutions. My day job is at CES, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. As a founding trustee, I also work closely with Dakshin Foundation which focusses on coastal and marine conservation and development. I am also associated in an advisory capacity with the Andaman and Nicobar Environmental Team.
I am Professor at the Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, where I indulge my fascination for ecology and evolution, working with students on frogs, reptiles, birds, plants, reef fish and other marine fauna. My research group works on the community ecology and evolutionary biogeography of various taxa. We work on diversity and distribution at both ecological and evolutionary timescales. I am also continuing my research on the ecology and evolutionary biology of marine turtles at various field sites around the country.

I am a founding trustee of Dakshin Foundation. My work with marine turtles in the last 15 years has led to my broader interest in coastal and marine conservation. I believe that social, cultural and political contexts largely determine conservation outcomes. In order to understand and possibly influence these systems, I am involved in research with students and colleagues on the political ecology of conservation, conflict and natural resource management. I am working with my colleagues to develop and implement community based resource monitoring programmes towards more participatory governance of these resources.
In addition to academic research, I am interested in strategies to improve environmental education and public understanding of science. This interest encouraged me to establish Current Conservation, a magazine that bridges conservation and art by bringing together research professionals, writers and artists from different parts of the world. Covering a range of topics related to environment and and conservation, the articles are illustrated with uniquely stylized artwork, info-graphics and photographic images from contributors across the world.
